NHS Improvement is responsible for overseeing foundation trusts, NHS trusts and independent providers. We offer the support these providers need to give patients consistently safe, high quality, compassionate care within local health systems that are financially sustainable. By holding providers to account and, where necessary, intervening, we help the NHS to meet its short-term challenges and secure its future.
NHS Improvement is the operational name for the organisation that brings together Monitor, NHS Trust Development Authority, Patient Safety, the National Reporting and Learning System, the Advancing Change team and the Intensive Support Teams.
In June this year government announced that it would proceed with the roll out of a crucial new system to protect patients and the public – the National Medical Examiner system.
This system will be headed up by a National Medical Examiner and NHS Improvement is looking for an exceptional candidate to fulfil this role.
Based in NHS Improvement and reporting directly to the NHS National Director of Patient Safety, you will be our ambassador for the professional leadership of the Medical Examiner System and will act as an adviser to government on the roll out and implementation of the ME system.
You will provide professional and strategic leadership to Medical Examiners (MEs) in their role of providing independent scrutiny and confirmation of cause(s) of death and other related functions. As such you will combine clinical expertise with outstanding interpersonal and leadership skills.
Through setting and leading standards of best practice to improve death certification processes you will ensure better safeguards for the public, inform and oversee learning from deaths initiatives and make a vital contribution to work to monitor and improve patient safety.
The successful candidate will be a registered medical practitioner with recent clinical experience alongside deep subject matter expertise and nationally recognised credentials in a relevant field.
The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
