NHS Improvement is the operational name for the organisation that brings together Monitor, NHS Trust Development Authority, Patient Safety, the National Reporting and Learning System, the Advancing Change team and the Intensive Support Teams.

The Head of Improvement in the London region will operate as a pivotal function within the Regional Team, supporting the improvement of quality and delivery whilst reducing cost per capita. This will be achieved through an integrated approach with regional colleagues and include the development and delivery of improvement programmes with trusts in the region.

The purpose of this role will be to lead the service improvement team to deliver effective and sustainable service improvement to challenged NHS Trusts. The service improvement team is a “roving” support team with a remit to run a programme management office which provides short term support to trusts across the region, and also deals with peaks in workload and new initiatives such as Success Regime, Vanguards, etc. The post holder will lead the Service Improvement team and ensure coordination of key projects as agreed with the Chief Operating Officer.

A key role will be to work with the Improvement leads within the other regions and the Improvement Directorate to ensure shared learning and a collaborative and co-ordinated approach to the improvement delivered. The post holder will help provide advice, guidance and challenge to ensure organisations adopt robust quality improvement methodologies. You will use sound diagnostic techniques to identify the areas of greatest opportunity for providers and signpost organisations to existing improvement programmes, such as those delivered by the regional AHSNs where appropriate. Where gaps exist, you will work with partner organisations to design and deliver improvement programmes to support improvements across the region, connecting organisations to share learning and successful improvement approaches.

A key function will be to support the Delivery and Improvement Directors, and their teams, to target areas of complexity such as delayed discharges and urgent and emergency care. This will require a collaborative approach and co-ordinated working with the improvement directorate, the data analytics teams and the wider system. The postholder will also work closely with the clinical team to ensure good clinical engagement where appropriate and undertake a number of strategic roles, leading on specific priorities of improvement for the regional team, as well as contributing to NHS Improvement projects on a national level where required.

This approach will support the delivery of the NHS vision of a sustainable fully autonomous provider landscape providing high quality services for patients and the objectives of NHS Improvement to support organisations to achieve good or outstanding ratings in the CQC inspection and deliver high quality, efficient and sustainable services.
