NHS Improvement is responsible for overseeing foundation trusts, NHS trusts and independent providers. NHS Improvement is the operational name for the organisation that brings together Monitor, NHS Trust Development Authority, Patient Safety, the National Reporting and Learning System, the Advancing Change team and the Intensive Support Teams.

The Improvement Directorate is responsible for building long term improvement and leadership development capability across the NHS and supporting shorter-term improvements across core NHS standards for acute, community ambulance trusts.

The Improvement Manager will have expertise in improvement, performance delivery and collaborative consultancy. They will have significant experience in urgent and emergency care and may also have a deep specialism in a particular professional discipline (e.g. nursing, physiotherapy, paramedics). They will come together with other improvement managers/senior improvement managers in a multidisciplinary team to provide expert guidance and direct support (through coaching, recommendations, facilitation and advice) in the delivery of key NHS standards.

The post holder will provide expert advice to deliver appropriate change programmes within H&SC Systems and promote the uptake of best practice initiatives that promote excellence in client systems including:

o Performance measurement
o Demand and capacity management
o Leadership, engagement and ownership
o Governance arrangements and processes
o Collection, analysis and use of information
o Implementation of re-designed pathways
o Patient navigation within and between providers
o Sustainable solutions

They will work with senior managers, executive directors and senior clinicians from all organisations that commission or provide NHS funded care across England (Health & Social Care Systems (H&SC Systems)) and will be responsible for designing and delivering tailored programmes and providing expert subject and improvement advice to senior leadership and boards of H&SC Systems. The post holder will work within the H&SC Systems to drive the reduction in variation of care delivery by highlighting good practice, driving its systematic implementation and deploying improvement methodologies to ensure continuous improvement.

Improvement Managers will carry out expert diagnostic reviews and produce high quality reports with clear recommendations that inform the development of H&SC Systems improvement programmes. They will work alongside clients to drive the implementation of the recommendations to deliver sustainable change and increase system resilience. The post holder in conjunction with their relevant Senior Improvement Manager will regularly assess and evaluate their effectiveness in the delivery of improvement to H&SC Systems. They will also work as part of the wider improvement directorate providing advice and coaching to clinicians, managers and other staff to drive the delivery of NHS constitutional standards, patient safety, efficiency and innovation.
